Meet This Month's Featured Artist
Hi! My name is Darlene Hayes aka "Aquaria Glass Studio”.
The Aquarian sun sign is in February, and I too am an Aquarian. My birthday is February 8 and I'll be 54 years old.
Lampwork beads are a new endeavor for me; taking my only class in
May of 2007. It was thru browsing the internet that I found
lampwork beads could be made at home. I immediately purchased
a kit and the rest is, as they say, history!
I suppose everyone who makes beads has their "thing". I would say that mine is specialty and odd glasses. Odd glass if you aren't aware has to do
with the color. In the manufacturing process, either by hand or mechanically, glass will occasionally not be of the correct tint or shade of the
standard. This glass is sold to the distributors as "oddlots". Also, other specialty glasses such as the glass by Double Helix Glassworks can
start out as a normal looking rod of glass, and with the proper manipulation by the artist can produce different colors or metallic lusters. This is
due to silver or other metals added to the glass during it's production. You will find that I often refer to DH(double helix) or "silver" glass in my
My art is changing constantly. My beading style is so different even from week to week. The sad part is that I rarely recreate beads. I
am always off to seek new color combinations or shapes, and never look back! I often think I will go back and make a certain style again, but I haven't
done it yet!
Recently, I became interested in creating my own jewelry as well. I have taken 2 silver soldering classes and am now set up to do that as well. There's
just so much to learn - too many things, too few days!
I have also been a registered nurse for almost 20 years. I've worked in all phases of care from ICU to the Recovery Room to Long Term Care. I
am no longer practicing as of May because of disability. My dog Annie, is a pit bull rescue from the Burbank Animal Shelter. She has filled a
tremendous void in my life. I can assure you this dog has no aggression and is the most loving dog I have had in my life. I also have a
Percheron/Thoroughbred mare. Her name is Patrice. I have had her since she was born on a freezing rainy night in Maryland in 1994, she too has
added so much to my life.
I truly enjoy the work of others and frequently browse the great work of the JustBeads.com artists. I'm happy to be a part of such a talented group and
I'm thrilled to be February's Featured Artist!
JustBeads.com was the first place I put my pitiful little offerings up for auction. I feel I've come a long way toward my dream of designing unique and
eclectic beads that attract collectors and other jewelry designers. Although I still have a ways to go, I want to use this forum to thank my customers
and friends here at JB. Words just can't express my appreciation for your acceptance and support and I hope you will continue to accompany me on my
