Meet This Month's Featured Artist

Hi!   My name is Barbara Fajardo of Desert Designs by Barbara.   My JustBeads user name is Rubarb.   I hope everyone had a peaceful and joyous holiday season.   It's hard to believe another year is over and a new one just begun!   My birthday is this month, so I don't always look forward to the beginning of a new year!

I live in the beautiful southwest part of the country, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.   I moved here when I was 4 years old so I consider myself a native.   I live with my husband Rudy (see how I got rubarb?), my sons Daniel, 15 and Evan, 11.   My family also includes Bailey, my pregnant mini Dachschund and my older outside dog, Riley, a white Samoyed cross.   Our home is in the north valley section of Albuquerque, a stone's throw from the mighty Rio Grande.   I have always been inspired by the colorful landscape and the large open skies here.

I was exposed to art and expression at an early age.   My father, an abstract artist, owned and operated The Art Center of Albuquerque.   It began as an art supply store and then branched out into ready made frames, custom frames and mats and finally to an art school.   I took a variety of classes at the school; watercolor, oils, charcoal, wire sculpture… (if only there was polymer clay back then!)   I knew that I loved color and design, but never really found a medium that I really enjoyed working with.

In January 2000, my friend Mac took me to a tin-punching class for my 40th birthday and I made a wonderful mirror!   I had such a good time that I started looking for another class that we could take together.   I found one called "Making Fimo Beads."   Finally, my love of color manifested itself in the swirling and blending of clay!

Working with it practically non-stop for three years has not tired me of it one bit!   All it takes is one really fantastic cane (which usually happens by accident, because I don't really plan my designs), and I feel I could do this forever!

I have a regular part-time day job, but as soon as I put in my hours, I can't wait to start mixing and blending.  When the guys can't find me, they don't have to look far.   I'm usually in my little corner of the study, crankin' that pasta machine!

I want to thank some special buyers that continue to support me; Chinacat, Sidhelan, and Butterflykj.  Many, many thanks to Bob and Bettina for creating such a wonderful site and for having me as the Featured Artist this month.
